Live in the Park – August 2021

December 3 @ 5:25 am

On Saturday 28th August 2021, the HLC held a stand to showcase our Centre and what we have to offer to our community at Live in the Park, hosted by Aylesbury Town Council. Based in Vale Park, Aylesbury, our stand was very popular with everyone who attended with our hook a duck activity, name the bear game and garden colouring competition being a big hit! We offered FREE balloons to everyone who visited the stand too!

As we are based in Walton Court, we wanted to use the event to reach the wider community of Aylesbury and Buckinghamshire and showcase the activities, events, wellbeing groups and other services we have to offer.

We had such a great response to the stand and are so grateful to everyone who took the time to come and visit and talk to us about the Centre. We are looking forward to the future and hope to welcome some new faces to the HLC. With a range of new activities starting up over the next few months keep up to date by following our social media platforms.

Community Cooking Courses – Growing Healthier Together

December 3 @ 5:25 am

Our Growing Healthier together project focused on promoting the Walton Court Community Garden , involving our nursery children with their families and local residents in planting and growing fresh foods, then following this with a series of cooking and nutritional workshops facilitated by Aylesbury Adult learning to utilise the produce grown and to promote healthy eating.

Our cooking courses ran for a total of 6 weeks, starting on 13th September and finishing on 18th October and ensured participants learnt some simple ideas for cooking inexpensive, delicious and healthy meals.

Using ingredients grown in our ‘Community garden’, the project in place with Aylesbury Garden Town, and promoting “grow your vegetables and learn to cook with them” project, the FREE course promoted the core values of the Healthy Living Centre and working partnership with Aylesbury Garden Town to promote and support healthy living.

The participants involved in the Cooking classes really enjoyed the course!

The ‘Community garden’ is still an ongoing project and is available for anyone to join. Please contact activitiescoordinator@healthylivingcentre.com or call 01296 334562 for more information.

Healthy Living Centre set to close

December 3 @ 5:25 am

Healthy Living Centre set to close

After careful consideration, The Healthy Living Centre (HLC) in Aylesbury is to close its doors for the last time on 31 March 2023, it has been announced.

The HLC is a community hub focused on supporting the disadvantaged communities of Southcourt and Walton Court in Aylesbury. In addition, it conducts outreach work in the Oakridge and Castlefield areas of High Wycombe and Vale in Chesham.

The centre was established in Walton Court in 2002 in order to support the local community in one of the most disadvantaged areas in the South East of England. The HLC works to improve the health and wellbeing of our community members by offering a wide range of services and activities appealing to different age groups and interests.

The centre’s future has become unviable due to a perfect storm caused by the loss of funding from the European Union European Social Fund following Brexit and changes to Government public health funding. These problems were compounded by a loss of revenue from rooms the centre previously rented out for events but which have become much less popular following the pandemic, as well as other operational challenges including soaring energy bills.

Julia King, chair of the HLC and long-standing Board member, said: “We are devastated that it has come to this but we just cannot see a way out, given the circumstances. We were already struggling due to having lost our EU funding following Brexit as well as the after-effects of the pandemic, but recent operational challenges and sky-high energy bills have been the final blow. We have held out as long as we could for the sake of the community but with the greatest regret have come to the conclusion that we simply cannot continue.”

”I’m proud of what the centre has achieved for people in Buckinghamshire over the past two decades and we are now pouring our energy into making our closure as bearable as possible for our staff and beneficiaries once we cease to operate at the end of March next year. We will continue to fulfil our purpose and support the community until then.”
